Why Did Square Enix DUMP Tomb Raider, Deus Ex?

Square Enix just sold its biggest western franchises to The Embracer Group. But who is Embracer, and why did Square decide to dump these beloved games for such a low price?

  1. I never got into Tomb Raider but I loved the game on Nintendo WiiU: Deus Ex Human Revolution Director's Cut . I got frustrated at it at first….but then I got through it to the end. It was a fun game.

Messed around back in the day with TOMB RAIDER on the PC but never got into it.
One day the gaming monopoly will occur. Where one company buys it all up. shrug
I always said one day a MEGACORP will be here as ALL COMPANIES are gobbled to a point where it reaches a CORPORATE SINGULAIRTY.
And well I am sure all of you have seen SCIFI B movies or A ones that tell of a certain kind of future huh.
I am sure you can totally, RECALL.
I am also sure this kind of thought…WILL BE BACK.
    AHEM.

  2. So when Squenix's attempt at NFTs fails (because let's be honest, that's what they mean by 'blockchain'), Sony will slide a napkin with a number on it across the table to them. Squenix will look disinterested but go ahead and discretely slip that napkin in their pocket and call them from the limo on the way home.

  3. I think the reason it went for so cheap is that Microsoft and Sony are caught up in their own acquisitions, so there were less buyers out there.

  4. Why does Legacy of Kain always get left out? out of all the IPs from Eidos this series is arguably the best one and the one that deserves a reboot the most.

  5. Embracer does sound sus, but on the other hand, they resurrected Volition from certain death so that we're now getting a new Saints Row. Hopefully, they can do the same with Deus Ex and others.

  6. This is just my guess, but could it be that they're letting go of IPs that has a lot of legacy tied to them? Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Legacy of Kain, Thief, they all have roots that goes way far back in the history of video games and are basically cult classics.

Did they receive some backlash after what they did to the modern iterations? Maybe Square Enix thinks that they can't handle IPs with so much history (that wasn't even theirs at the first place, wasn't even Japanese made) and decided that they don't want to have those IPs in their hands anymore.

IPs that they keep like Life is Strange is more recent and is much more… flexible, I think?

  8. Although I did like the new tomb raiders games it felt more like katniss everdeen than actual Lara Croft.
I think it's funny when they started the reboots they wanted to make her more of a feminist modern day woman and yet they rewrote her backstory to a young girl with daddy issues.

  9. Square has always devalued Deus ex. I hope this means we will get another one, or maybe a remake of the original?? And not a black hole that we never see again

  10. Perhaps Sony wants to buy Square Enix as fast as possible but without their western branch. So Square just held a sale and dumped their western properties because the deal with Sony was lucrative enough? This is me just rambling though im not claiming that thats what happened.
